I received my B.A. in Creative Writing Saturday night in a beautiful ceremony at Smith Hall. As a first generation college student, this is a pretty big deal for me and my family. I got a job offer to work for a creative video advertising agency out in Hollywood, CA, and I have a few more weeks at my current apartment before I make an epic 21-hour drive across the country to begin a life out on the West Coast. Here are a few things that Ive come to realize over commencement weekend: Youre not the same person who attended convocation You made lifelong friends and/or found your significant other here Its hard saying goodbye to professors, faculty, and advisors All your mistakes, all the what-ifs dont matter anymore Change is a good thing Its weird being done with undergrad. I remember not wanting to attend convocation the first week of college because I couldnt stand large crowds and I just felt nervous to walk by myself with no one I knew. Today, I am so glad that I did. Im so glad I got out of that shell and just went for it. Not only did I meet some friends there who are still in my life, but thats how I met my best friend and fiance.  Yes, I met my future husband  husking corn for the 2012 Guinness Record. You just dont expect these little things to have a profound impact on you! I guess, #ILLINILOVE is a thing. My best friend/fiance and I standing in front of the Eternal Flame! Its also hard knowing I have to leave this place I made my home for the past four years. The people you meet at this time in your life change you. You learn to be responsible, forgiving, and you understand you cant see them all the time because of other obligations. I think thats the moment where you truly grow up and begin to appreciate those around you. Anyway, my best friend served in the Marines, and then enrolled to the English departments  Creative Writing program because he wanted to share his story and passion for fiction writing with the rest of the world. Weve had so many workshops and classes together, and Im sad thats coming to an end, but we learned so much about ourselves, our craft, and how to be a better person addressing  constructive criticism. Hes expected to join the MFA program out in Purdue in the fall. So proud of him! John, a good friend of mine also in Creative Writing. Saying goodbye to the professors in your life is strangely difficult too. My Creative Writing professors took so much time out of their schedules to meet with me on side projects and for pitching advice my way on MFA programs. You hear about their lives, their current writing projects, and they become more of a mentor than just an instructor. They invest in your ideas, if youre invested in challenging yourself. Thats whats so incredible about my time here as a student; I didnt just feel like a number, I shared an overwhelmingly creative space with passionate folks. Two of my favorite Creative Writing professors! Sometimes, I find myself regretting not joining a certain RSO (Registered Student Organization) I expressed interest at first on Quad Day and didnt bother to pursue, or regret on the fall outs of a few friends from my residence hall days. Looking back now, things just sort of work out in the end. I completed college working two jobs most of my undergrad career to support myself financially and I maintained  a high GPA, volunteered when I could, and completed my assignments with pride. Im a better writer now taking risks in all sorts of experiencesâ€"from prose to marketing writingâ€"and thats what makes me feel like a better writer and person today. Even as  a socially anxious person, I signed up to be a campus tour guide! How daring that was. Undergrad career done! I dont know if Ill always enjoy writing, and I dont know if Ill stay in the same career path all my life. Heck, I dont know if Ill stay in the LA area my entire life. All I know is that Im ready to welcome change, an entry-level writing career, and that Ill always be a bit nostalgic about my days here. The issue of heterogeneity is important in diversity because people have to be aware of the differences between individuals in other to enable them accept others. So that people will know and understand that in spite of all the differences, there are also similarities that human beings share. The next issue is the issue of class. Carl Max defined class as an antagonistic relationship that is always relative to another group based on exploitation and control. Social class is a group of people that have comparable social and economic status. Classification of people based on what you have, that is economic capital the quantity of your wealth, who you know which is the social capital and what you know the cultural capital. Class does not only affect people economically but it also affects people emotionally. Race is considered the group of people who share the same physical and biological factors. This introduces racism which is the thought of one ethnic group or race to be superior to others, thereby making them to discriminate and oppress people who are not from their own race. It makes people know that they are not the only ones who look different or sound different to the rest of the world. It also has disadvantages which are; it creates a way for people to discriminate and oppress individuals who are from certain or different race from thei r own. It makes some people feel superior to others there by making those individuals fell inferior and less important in the society. The issue of racism should be addressed in diversity in other to make people understand that race does not mean any group is superior or inferior to others. It creates awareness to people that no matter the difference in individuals, humanbeings still share basic needs as nature requires them to. It will also make them understand that it is wrong to discriminate and feel threatened by other race. It may make individuals to accept people for who they are. Lastly, the issue of gender. These are the socially constructed roles, behaviour, activities and attributes that society considers male and female to attain. These roles are being fixed by the society while some by nature. This determines what role individuals should play. Gender in some society is determined physically. It is important for people to know their gender roles in other for them to know what the society requires of them to do. It is also important for people to know their gender in other to play the right role so as not confuse their children. This is because in so many cases of single mothers or and fathers, their children grow up to play the wrong role in the society. Gender also consists of disadvantages. This is because people misuse certain gender to oppress. They have the believe that a certain gender is inferior to the other. For instance, the male gender consider the female gender to be inferior to them there by oppressing them. India is a very good example to ci te gender discrimination. In India, the male gender make the female gender to the hard work that they are suppose to do. This is because they fell they are inferior to them. This issue gender is of great importance to be discussed in diversity, to let individuals know that people can choose their own gender roles. And gender does not mean one group is superior to the other. Diversity can be used to correct the how people view gender. Some societies that discriminates the female gander can be corrected through diversity. All the five issues that were discussed above in this essay revolve around diversity. They are issues that the society misunderstand their importance what they stand for thereby making them to discriminate, operess and prejudice people. These issues are important to be discussed in diversity in other to correct the ills in the society.Therefore, diversity is of great importance because it determines the future state of the society if it is ignored and not cared for. Virginia Woolf’s a Room of One’s Own

Though published seventy years ago, Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own holds no less appeal today than it did then. Modern women writers look to Woolf as a prophet of inspiration. In November of 1929, Woolf wrote to her friend G. Lowes Dickinson that she penned the book because she â€Å"wanted to encourage the young women–they seem to get frightfully depressed† (xiv). The irony here, of course, is that Woolf herself eventually grew so depressed and discouraged that she killed herself. The suicide seems symptomatic of Woolf's own feelings of oppression within a patriarchal world where only the words of men, it seemed, were taken seriously.Nevertheless, women writers still look to Woolf as a liberating force and, in particular, at A Room of One's Own as an inspiring and empowering work. Woolf biographer Quentin Bell notes that the text argues: the disabilities of women are social and economic; the woman writer can only survive despite great difficulties, and despite th e prejudice and the economic selfishness of men; and the key to emancipation is to be found in the door of a room which a woman may call her own and which she can inhabit with the same freedom and independence as her brothers. 144) Woolf empowers women writers by first exploring the nature of women and fiction, and then by incorporating notions of androgyny and individuality as it exists in a woman's experience as writer. Woolf's first assertion is that women are spatially hindered in creative life. â€Å"A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction,† Woolf writes, â€Å"and that as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of women. . . and fiction unresolved† (4). What Woolf seems to say is that being female stifles creativity.Woolf does not assume, however, that a biological reason for this stifling exists. Instead, she implies that a woman's â€Å"life conflicts with something that is not life† (71). In other words , mothering, being a wife, and the general daily, culturally defined expectations of women infringe upon creativity, in particular the writing of fiction. The smothering reality of a woman's life – – housekeeping and child-rearing duties, for example – – distract a woman from writing. Sadly, Woolf notes, even if a woman in such circumstances manages to write anyway, â€Å"she will write in a rage where she should write calmly.She will write foolishly where she should write wisely. She will write of herself where she should write of her characters† (69-70). Woolf posits here that an angry woman, writing out of the repression of her everyday life, will be an ineffective writer. Finally, Woolf blames the patriarchal culture, as if the freedom of women writing is â€Å"some infringement of [man's] power to believe in himself† (35). She suggests that men resist women writers because fiction by women somehow diminishes their belief in their own wo rks.Woolf's message, it seems, is that women must rail against the resistance of the patriarchal culture and attain some degree of independence and androgyny. Woolf does not suggest that women write the same as men. In fact, Woolf asserts that â€Å"it would be a thousand pities if women wrote like men, or lived like men, or looked like men† (88). Woolf believes that a man's sentence is not a woman's sentence, that the two will be vastly different from each other, though not necessarily one better than the other.Her assertion is that men's sentences are awkward in the hands of women because â€Å"the nerves that feed the brain would seem to differ in men and women† (78). This difference of gray matter and neurons would necessarily result in a difference of perspective and sentence structure. Woolf suggests that for fiction to be artfully done, there must exist a measure of androgyny, â€Å"a plan of the soul so that in each of us two powers preside, one male, one fema le† (98).In essence, Woolf claims that this state of androgyny would allow women the same freedom to express themselves that men seem to have been inherently endowed with. â€Å"The androgynous mind is resonant and porous,† Woolf continues, â€Å"it transmits emotion without impediment; it is naturally creative, incandescent and undivided† (98). What Woolf overtly states here is that the ideal creative mind is a marriage, or balance, of the supposed female traits of emotionalism with the supposed male traits of productivity and style. What is implicit, however, is that the female mind can be resonant and porous only when undivided.In other words, a woman can write well only when her mind, like a man's, is not forced to choose between gender and identity, or between her art and society's expectations of her. A woman will write with fluidity and resonance only when she has the same freedom of expression as a man. An additional notion Woolf presents is that women mu st maintain individuality in their experiences as writers. This intimacy with one's identity nurtures the creation of fiction, but only when written out of one's own personality and not imitated through another's. â€Å"Why are Jane Austen's sentences not the right shape for you? Woolf asks Mary Carmichael (80). The idea Woolf reinforces here is that a woman should find and develop her own writing style, not simply mimic her predecessors. Notice, though, that Woolf does not suggest we glean no stylistic inspiration from women writers like the Brontes and Jane Austen, who paved the way for generations of women writers. â€Å"Books continue each other,† Woolf says, â€Å"in spite of our habit of judging them separately† (80). Continuing something, however, does not mean using the same blueprints or tools during the creative process.What Woolf implies is that every book a woman, sitting in that room of her own, produces will generate books from other women. A degree of m imicry, of course, is impossible to avoid. â€Å"A woman writing,† Woolf admits, â€Å"thinks back through her mothers† (97). The â€Å"mothers† here are not only biological mothers who give birth to our physical bodies, but also those women who meticulously scratched their way out of patriarchal constraints and into print; the women who acted as surrogates to birth generations of women writers.Subtle mimicry would seem a natural act under such circumstances, much as a child unconsciously develops personality traits of either parent. Finally, a woman reading Woolf's book has to wonder if that â€Å"room of one's own† is strictly a spatial, physical concept. It is possible that Woolf writes of a psychological construct as a room of one's own, a place one can emotionally go to and write from. Few of us have the luxury of a concrete room of our own, and if we are to be writers, emotional space of our own is the barest necessity.Women who want to write must f ind some quiet space in their psyches from which they can create. â€Å"So long as you write what you want to write, that is all that matters,† Woolf encourages, â€Å"and whether it matters for ages or only for hours, nobody can say† (106). What Woolf seems to say is that what we create within that space of ourselves, within a single moment, is what matters so long as we do it with an eye toward our own individual, androgynous hearts.

It wasn t until 1789 when the U.S Marshals Service was created followed by other federal services. The first actual police department that was created was in Philadelphia in 1 751 followed by Richmond Virginia in 1807 and Boston in 1838. The way the first police departments were set up post-civil war era was a military style set up with ranks and levels to what officer authorities are (police, 2013). In that sense not much has changed except some styles of rank of officers as well as some of the ways some situations and how they are dealt with. The biggest change that has happened is actual changing of laws and constitutions and how they are enforced by officers. The purpose of policing is to prevent crime and to maintain order while having the trust of the community in order to correctly apply the laws. In the beginning this was not always the case. The issue that presented itself back in that time was racism and the way the police department and officers would conduct the laws and enforce them when an African American would commit them and the severity of the punishment.
